What to bring:

  • Camera, comfortable hiking shoes, backpack, binoculars (Pentax 8x24 UCF G or UCF WR binos to be very good and very inexpensive), rain coat, sun-glasses, a cap or hat and drinking water
  • You might experience beautiful, warm summer weather while you are here, but it is possible to have winter conditions in any season. When visiting a mountainous environment, it's important to have a winter hat and mitts or gloves along and to dress in layers
  • We use and recommend hiking poles
  • The music from your country you like most
  • Buy enough food (Food Kitty) to provide all (evening meals, lunch - sandwich bread and breakfasts). Evening meals are usually simple and filling. Things like pasta with sauce, burritos or lasagna. The food kitty also provides a basic breakfast (cereal, toast, coffee tea) each morning and bread to make lunch sandwiches- provide very basic fillings. At the supermarket you will have a chance to buy your own sandwich fillings, snacks, fruit or beverages and bottled water you will want for the trip (everybody likes different things).
  • We have opportunity to make our meals together in the hostels each morning and evening

Day 1, Full Day (7:00 - 19:00), Calgary - Banff - Lake Louise

  • Driving West on the Hwy #1A - More scenic then Trans Canada Hwy #1
  • Enjoy a scenic informative drive and beautiful scenery of Alberta Foothills, Magnificent Canadian Rockies and Bow Valley
  • Entering Banff National Park - BNP is Canada's oldest national park, established in 1885, in the Canadian Rockies. The park, located 110-180 km (70-110 mi) west of Calgary in the province of Alberta, encompasses 6,641 square km (2,564 sq mi) of mountainous terrain, with numerous glaciers and ice fields, dense coniferous forest, and alpine landscapes. The Icefields Parkway extends from Lake Louise, connecting to Jasper National Park in the north. Provincial forests and Yoho National Park are neighbors to the west, while Kootenay National Park is located to the south and Kananaskis Country to the southeast. The main commercial centre of the park is the town of Banff, in the Bow River valley
  • Shortly visiting Two Jack Lake and Lake Minnewanka for great view and photo opportunity. Lake Minnewanka is the Park's largest lake and the only one where power boats are permitted. We may see bighorn sheep, deer or elk on way to lake.
  • Geological wonders of the Hoodoo's with great view of the Bow Valley, Tunnel Mountain Summit - viewpoint trail along the Bow River to the Surprise Corner and Bow Falls with Banff Springs Hotel view
  • Visiting beautiful Moraine Lake. Little hike up the 'Rock Pile' so we can get a spectacular view over the lake and the Valley of the Ten Peaks. Lake El. 1887 m (Samuel Allen, had chosen to name the peaks from east to west using the numbers from the Stoney Indian language as follows - Heejee, Nom, Yamnee, Tonsa, Sapta, Shappee, Sagowa, Saknowa, Neptuak, and Wenkchemna - All but three of the peaks have subsequently been renamed to honour a variety of individuals - 1.Mount Fay, 2.Mount Little, 3.Mount Bowlen, 4.Tonsa, 5.Mount Perren, 6.Mount Allen, 7.Mount Tuzo, 8.Deltaform Mountain, 9.Neptuak Mountain, 10.Wenkchemna Peak)
  • Lunch and check-in to Lake Louise HI hostel
  • After lunch, we'll spend the afternoon at world famous Lake Louise - Teal-blue waters reflect stately Chateau Lake Louise Hotel and the Victoria Glacier.
    Time to hike, one of 3 choices:
    1. Lakeshore Trail - 2 km one way, no elevation gain, 1 hour round trip
    2. Fairview Lookout Trail - 1 km one way, elevation gain 100m, 1 hour round trip
    3. Lake Agnes Trail - 3.4 km one way, elevation gain 385 m, +3.5 hours round trip (from late June until early Oct.)
  • or to go Canoeing, or maybe do a little Shopping at the Chateau Lake Louise Hotel- Scenic highlights of the Lake Louise area.
  • Dinner time and later in the evening we can go for a short walk (optional).

Day 2, Full Day (7:00 - 20:00), Lake Louise - Columbia Icefield - Jasper

  • Breakfast time, check-out and leaving Lake Louise
  • After Lake Louise we'll drive NW up the Icefield Parkway (Hwy # 93) all the way to the Jasper to some of the most majestic mountain scenery in North America. A scenic, relaxing drive and home to a variety of wildlife that offers you a chance to view elk, deer, sheep, coyote, and mountain goat
  • Stopping by Crowfoot Glacier and Bow Lake (the source of Bow River) - for great view and photo opportunity
  • Little hike and shortly visiting Bow Summit and Peyto Lake - During the summer, significant amounts of glacial rock flour flow into the lake, and these suspended rock particles give the lake a bright, turquoise color. The lake is fed by the Peyto Creek, which drains water from the Caldron Lake and Peyto Glacier and flows into the Mistaya River - total length of 38 km. Mistaya merges into the North Saskatchewan River at Saskatchewan River Crossing
  • Entering Jasper National Park - JNP is the largest national park in the Canadian Rockies, spanning 10,878 km2 (4200 mi2). It is located in the province of Alberta, to the north of Banff National Park and west of the city of Edmonton. The park includes the glaciers of the Columbia Icefield, hot springs, lakes, waterfalls and, of course, mountains. Wildlife in the park include elk, caribou, moose, mule deer, white-tailed deer, mountain goat, bighorn sheep, grizzly bear, black bear, beaver, Rocky Mountain pika, hoary marmot, gray wolf, mountain lion, and wolverine
  • Columbia Icefield - hike to the toe and ice-walking on Athabasca Glacier or you can experience Glacier Snow Coach tour - Ice Explorers (90 min). Open from April to end of October. Admission include 5% GST - Adult $38.00. The glacier is approximately 6 km (3.75 miles) long, covers an area of 6 km2 (2.5 mi2), and is measured to be between 90 meters (270 ft) and 300 meters (1000 ft) thick
  • Short stop by Tangle Falls and shortly visiting Athabasca Falls - Most powerful falls in Rockies (river tumbles 25 m into gorge) El. 1200 m
  • Arrival in Jasper, Check-in and Lunch time at the Jasper HI hostel
  • Afternoon Hiking and exploring Maligne Canyon from 1st to 4th Bridge. One of the most spectacular gorges in the Canadian Rockies, sheers limestone walls plunge to depths of over 50 meters (165 ft.)
  • Viewing Incredible disappearing Medicine Lake and then visiting Maligne Lake, one of the most photographed lakes in the world. ''This is optional'' - you can experience 1.5 hour Maligne Lake Cruise - Admission includes 5% GST - Adult $45.00. Open from early June to early September
  • The evening we will spend in Jasper. Tour the town site and have time to do a little shopping
  • Dinner time or evening meal we can have out in town or in the HI Hostel. Your choice!

Day 3, Full Day (7:00 - 18:00), Jasper - Johnson Canyon - Calgary

  • Breakfast time, check-out and living Jasper
  • Have a short drive to Pyramid Lake for nice viewpoint and possibility to see some wild life
  • ''This is optional'' - Jasper Tramway Ride - 7 min. cable car ride transports you to 2,265 m elevation for spectacular view of Jasper town site surrounded by sparkling lakes and craggy peaks. Admission includes 5% GST - Adult $25.00. Open from mid April to mid October. Hike on Whistlers Summit Trail (El. 2,465 m) - from upper tramway terminal 1.5 km trail leads up to bare, rounded summit of Whistlers Mountain. There you are rewarded with a 360-degree view and a sighting dial to identify the peaks surrounding you
  • We stop at Mistaya Canyon to have a little hike - a black limestone canyon (Mistaya means "Big bear" in Cree)
  • Lunch time at Baker Creek Chalets Picnic area
  • Stop at Castle Mountain viewpoint
  • 2+ hours Hike Johnston Canyon to upper Falls - The trail begins as a paved walkway for the first 1.1 km (0.7 miles) to the Lower Falls. Here, the water plunges 10 m (33 feet) into a deeply carved pothole below. The trail becomes slightly more rugged as the hike continues to the Upper Falls (3.2 km/1.8 miles). El. Gain 30 m. The spectacular Upper Falls are dramatic with water cascading down more than 30 m (almost 100 feet). Steel catwalk allow you to walk right along the face of canyon walls and above the rushing waters
  • Finishing our journey arriving in Calgary between 5:30 - 6:00 pm
